ROBERT C. RIVAS, ESQ., former Mayor of the Borough of Bergenfield from 1998 to 2003, is the first-elected Filipino-American Mayor in the East Coast of theUnited States.  Previous to that, he was a Bergenfield Councilman from 1996 to 1998, as well as a Democratic Party County Committeeman from 1991 to 2002.  He also served on the Bergenfield Library Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors for the Bergenfield Special Improvement District.  In December 2002, then Governor James E. McGreevey honored Mr. Rivas by appointing him the first Chairman of the Asian American Commission for the State ofNew Jersey.

A practicing attorney for over thirty-seven years, Mr. Rivas has several reported Superior Court cases to his credit.  He is a former member of the Supreme Court District Ethics Committee forBergenCounty, and the former Executive Director for Bergen County Legal Services.  He was also the 1995 recipient of the J. Harris David Award for Career Service given by Legal Services of New Jersey.

He is a former board member for the Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey, and served as an adviser for the Eastern Region of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA).  He is a former member of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association, the Bergen County Bar Association and the Asian American Political Coalition.  He also served as President of the Filipino American Association of Bergenfield from 1997 to 1999.  He has also served as the Chapter Commander of the Bergenfield Chapter of the Order of the Knights of Rizal.


He has been a member of the Bergenfield Planning Board since 1996 and is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. (FALDEF).


Mr. Rivas attended Ateneo de Manila University in thePhilippinesfor his freshman year and graduated in 1971 fromSt.FrancisCollegeinBrooklyn,New York, with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History.  He attended Seton Hall University School of Law inNewark,New Jersey, and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1974.  He was admitted to practice law inNew Jerseythat same year.


Mr. Rivas is married to Marjorie Pilar Carceller, and they have two lovely daughters, Renee – an attorney, and Natalie – a high school senior.
